But I’ve never read a book that I so throughly enjoyed without being able to explain why. To put it simply, it’s the story of a person named Philip from the age of nine. First published inOf Human Bondage is widely considered to be Somerset Maugham’s masterpiece and is believed to have been at least partially based on Maugham’s own life.

This is the tale of Philip Carey, who is orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle. Of Human Bondage is the story of a young man's struggle to find the meaning of life in a world that is cruel.

Philip Carey has a club foot, making him the subject of cruelty at school and ridicule in the adult world. Philip allows this treatment to warp his personality, making him introspective and solitary.

Of Human Bondage is considered Maugham’s masterpiece and has become a widely studied classic since its publication.

It was included in a list of The Best Novels by The Guardian at number 44 as well as other similar rankings. The book was adapted into a film starring Bette Davis inwhich was the first to cement the actress as a star.
